Why I Built My Own App: The Story Behind Forest Reader

They say if you want something done right, you have to do it yourself.

As a lifelong bibliophile and a software engineer, I’ve tried many e-reader app on the Play Store. Some were beautiful but lacked the power to handle large technical PDFs. Others were powerful but cluttered with ads, tracking, or expensive subscriptions. I just wanted a quiet, private place to read—a digital “forest” away from the noise.

One day, I realized: I have the tools to build this.

From Frustration to “Forest”

Forest Reader started as a personal project. I wanted an app that was:

  • Lightweight & Fast: No bloat, just the books.
  • Format-Flexible: Something that handled EPUBs, PDFs, and Comics (CBR/CBZ) with equal grace.
  • Respectful of Privacy: No data collection. No selling your reading habits to the highest bidder.

What started as a tool for my own needs grew into something I realized other readers might be looking for, too.

Built by One, Shared with Everyone

Forest Reader is a true “one-man band” project. I’ve spent countless late nights refining the typography, optimizing the code for the latest Android standards, and ensuring that the open-source Readium architecture it’s built on runs like a dream.

I’ve decided to release Forest Reader for free. I believe that access to a great reading experience shouldn’t be gated behind a paywall.

Keep the Forest Growing

While the app is free to use, it isn’t “free” to make. It takes time, energy, and a lot of caffeine. If you find that Forest Reader finally gives you the reading experience you’ve been looking for, I’ve included a “Buy me a coffee” button at the about section of the app. Your support goes directly toward paying for development tools, coffee beans, and the ongoing mission of making Forest Reader the best companion for your next literary adventure.
